For most people who do sedentary jobs sitting in cubicles with the computer as the best friend, snacking has become a favorite time-kill. Most days when I am not running between the two buildings at work for meetings, I find myself voracious an hour or so after lunch. I find myself walking subconsciously towards the vending machine for either a soda or a bag of chips. It is equally bad for people who stay at home or work from home, only that you can prevent yourself from ransacking the vending machine which is filled up with evil snacks galore. If snacking for boredom is not a killer enough, snacking without realizing only makes it worse.
But did you realize that this addictive snacking business can be turned into a healthy choice rather than trying to stop yourself from snacking. Studies say that smaller and more frequent meals are healthier than one big ass meal, provided you are eating healthy in either case. Some healthy foods you can munch on at work are whole grain cereal bars, whole grain crackers with low-fat cheese, veggies with low fat cheese dip, mixed fruits chopped etc. If you have a microwave at work you can also get yourself some canned soups. Be careful that you balance out the daily sodium intake in other foods that you eat during the day, because most soups are high in sodium. You can, however, get low-sodium soups. Unsalted nuts are another way to kill boredom. [timepass batani]. Bags of air-popped popcorn are another big-time favorite. It is healthy as long as you pick the ones without butter. Yes, they make those too. Isn’t that some news?
My favorites are animal crackers and veggies with a dip. I close my eyes before I pick a cracker and by running my fingers around it try to guess the animal. If I guess it right, I eat it right away; otherwise I put it back in the bag. This is a great way to entertain myself while filling my dear tummy up. I was even thinking of patenting this to all bored software programmers, but I did not want to publicize and let the managers find out about the reason for my permanent smiling face.
But seriously, this is the time of the day to get your intake of fiber and vitamins. Use the food pyramid to add what you otherwise miss during your day. When you are at work and bored and hungry even veggies sound delightful. You can make it flavorful and less boring by adding some exciting dips. Hummus can serve as a good dip too and it is a good source of protein. Most grocery stores sell hummus in decent sized containers, but did you know it is a cinch to make it at home? If I can make it, anyone can!!
The next time you feel the urge to scarf up some chocolate or some other sugar just distract yourself with a box of precut fruits that you packed in the morning from home. There is a real big difference between naturally occurring sugars and added sugars. If any snack that you get from the vending machine has sugar in the first couple of ingredients run for the hills and don’t look back. They take you directly to hell. Excess sugar in your diet can lower your immune system, increase your Triglyceride levels [remember heart attacks] in addition to a lot of other bad things. It is really interesting to note that our body cannot really differentiate between natural and added sugars. Then what is the big deal you might ask. The difference is that natural sugars come padded with some good stuff like fiber, antioxidants etc, whereas added sugars are nothing but calories. Otherwise known as dead food!!
One good way to ensure you snack well is to plan for snacking also well in advance. Take veggies, fruits, snack bars etc from home. Not only will it save you money, you also know exactly what goes into it. Some people keep a big box of animal crackers or pretzels at work, but it is difficult to teach yourself discipline of limit. I would say, if you can buy snack size bags in bulk in grocery stores, nothing can beat it. Otherwise pack pre-measured amounts into zip lock bags. You can make boring things exciting by adding unconventional stuff, like a cupful of raisins or dried cranberries into your pack of crackers etc.
Anyways, enough said. Snack wisely. Eat healthy and exercise.

life is sooooooooooo complicated
i dont like chips, i dont like colas, i dont drink coffee or tea !
Just water or milk is fine for me!
So when people tell I dont have to worry abt eating too much as I wont get fat, I point them to my eating habits and ask them to follow it :))
Thankfully I have not gotten into the habit of snacking while working! As if those calories I add during the rest of the day werent enuf!!;)
Ananth, I can only wish to be like u..*sigh* Not only do I *love* coffee, tea, chips etc, I also HATE milk... and everytime I walk up to get a glass of water, I am pulled towards the coffee machine right next to the water cooler!!:(((((
Cheti, I am with you...
Ananth, you lucky dawg! Btw, I dont like any of those too.. including milk.. I was not talking about liking, but eating in spite of it or irrespective of it.. sometimes we eat not because we are hungry but because we are bored.
Nitya, try shifting to green tea whenever you feel like coffee.. I know it is a far cry.. but you will get used to it.. at some point :)
Okay for now I will doff my dietician cap and relax!! :D
not just milk ! it shud be badam milk or bournvita ( dont laugh now :D )
hmm eating habits....from as long as i remember it was almost a rule at home not to eat junk food before lunch/dinner as we wont have food properly ( ofcourse all rules apply only to me and not my sister - thats another story ) ...
so never got into a habit of eating anything between breakfast and lunch and lunch and dinner ! even now if i eat something in the evening i cant have dinner properluy !!
Ananth, LOL!! Sorry could not help it!
Why not Farex? I wonder!! :))
I know our parents insist on not eating anything before meals, but the more I read and research I find that shorter meals spread out throughout the day are as good if not better than three solid meals. Anyways, whatever works!!
Good post. I have always thought about doing all you said but I have been a bit lazy to do it...now I am more encouraged! Its always the balance of diet and exercise that contributes to the fitness - one without the other is like just building muscles on only certain parts of the body. I have seen guys without huge muscular upper bodies and chicken and legs and its not a pretty sight!
As for the choice of foods, I think the key is to have a balanced diet. Like I have read, there is nothing wrong with haveing a bagel or muffin(carbs and fat) for breakfast, as long as you balance it with some cottage cheese or fat-free milk(protein).
That was a great 'treat' Funny!! I did not have to hold my sides up for too long!!;-)) lol!!
I am hummus freak myself!! I used it as a spread in sammies as well, its a whole lot healthier than butter...:-))
lol@ amul baby ananthu....hyuk hyuk!! :-p
Umm... add to the pleasures of a smart snack the following phenomenon: Dousing your boss's shirt 'inadvertently' with the cocktail of your choice and watching his face!! ;))
Thanks CG for leaving a comment. I agree, a combo of a healthy diet and good exercise is important. if you have checked out the new Food Pyramid released you will see a man walking up the stairs. Exercise is being recognized more and more. The only thing I dont agree with the latest Pyramid is that it is not really a Pyramid anymore.
Chay Sweetie, Thanks a lot. Now, I included Bananas in my list of work time snacks. :)))
Sudipta, I think I will add that suggestion to my future blog titled - How to get fired in 10 days. Thanks a lot :))
you have an awesome blog going here..and also not a lot of traffic unlike some of the other awesome blogs that I have seen..I always prefer quiet, serene, undiscovered treasures to the popular touristy spots :-p
Loved some of ur previous posts..like the one of "dating rules" and the seven samurai..and of course the v-day rant had me in splits :)
Do you mind if I add ya to my "fav haunts list"....?
On second thoughts, maybe not, I dont want this to become another crowded touristy spot like Orlando :-p..just kidding :)

sheesh..look who was talking about random number generators and all on my blog.
Since we are talking about random numbers and probability theory and all that, I would say that your blogging behavior follows an exponential distribution - the only distribution with the memoryless property - The fact that you have not updated for so long has no bearing on the time until the next update...:)
Okay..I think that was enough geekiness for a day :)
